The results show that ZMA increased serum zinc levels by 11 to 17% (non-significant effect, p=0,12), but no significant difference was observed between groups in anabolic or catabolic hormones, body composition, bench press or leg press strength, muscular endurance or anaerobic capacity. The authors conclude that ZMA supplementation during training does not appear to improve training adaptations in populations already trained in resistance exercise.
The only available controlled trial on ZMA in a sports setting did not show benefits for strength, body composition or hormones in already trained men. This does not mean that ZMA is useless: it may still be relevant for correcting a genuine zinc or magnesium deficiency, but it should not be presented as a proven performance enhancer.
Zinc and magnesium remain essential minerals for the proper functioning of the body, independently of any direct effect on performance. Prasad (2009, Journal of the American College of Nutrition) published a landmark review on the impact of discovering zinc deficiencies on health, confirming that zinc plays an important role in cellular immune functions (monocytes, dendritic cells, macrophages), has anti-inflammatory properties, and that a deficiency can worsen immune status and oxidative stress.
