Rogerson et al. (2007, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research) confirmed this lack of effect in a sports context: a double-blind trial involving 22 elite Australian rugby league players, supplemented with 450 mg/day of Tribulus extract during 5 weeks of intensive physical preparation. Strength and lean mass increased significantly in both groups, with no difference between Tribulus and placebo, and no change in the urinary testosterone/epitestosterone ratio.
This does not mean that Tribulus is useless. It simply means that excessive promises should be avoided. Its benefits may be more related to the feeling of vitality, libido or energy than to a hormonal increase or guaranteed strength gains.
The confusion mainly comes from marketing around natural hormonal boosters. Many products combine Tribulus, zinc, magnesium, maca, fenugreek, ashwagandha or tongkat ali.
