An energy drink is a beverage formulated to temporarily support mental energy, alertness or the feeling of intensity. It generally contains caffeine, sometimes taurine, B vitamins, plant extracts, amino acids or carbohydrates depending on the product positioning.
It is important not to confuse an energy drink with a sports drink. A sports drink, in the athletic sense, is mainly used to provide carbohydrates and electrolytes during endurance exercise. An energy drink, on the other hand, mainly affects alertness and the perception of exertion, often thanks to caffeine.

In weight training, an energy drink can be useful before a heavy or high-volume workout. It can help improve focus, motivation and intensity during sets. However, it does not replace a true pre-workout when an athlete is also looking for muscle pump or a more complete formula.
Outside of sport, energy drinks can occasionally help during a drop in alertness, provided they are not used to mask chronic fatigue related to lack of sleep or insufficient recovery.
During a muscle-cutting phase, some sugar-free drinks can be interesting for maintaining a feeling of energy without adding many calories. However, it is important to remain mindful of sleep quality and nervousness.

Grgic et al. (2019, British Journal of Sports Medicine) published an umbrella review summarizing 21 meta-analyses on the effects of caffeine on sports performance. Their findings show that caffeine is ergogenic for aerobic endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, power, jumping performance and movement speed. The quality of evidence was generally rated as moderate. The authors note that the effects are overall more pronounced for aerobic efforts than for anaerobic efforts.
Guest et al. (2021, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition) specified in the reference position stand on caffeine that a dose of 3 to 6 mg/kg of body mass, taken approximately 60 minutes before exercise, significantly improves several dimensions of performance. They emphasize that individual response varies greatly depending on genetic metabolism and that sensitive individuals may experience disrupted sleep from late consumption. Therefore, there is no need to systematically seek the highest dose: the best dose is the one that improves the workout without compromising recovery.

Oui, selon une revue de Grgic et al. publiée dans le British Journal of Sports Medicine, la caféine améliore significativement les performances en endurance, en force et en efforts répétés à haute intensité. L'ISSN (Guest et al.) recommande 3-6 mg/kg pour un effet optimal. Une canette standard contient 80-160mg de caféine, ce qui représente une dose pertinente pour un sportif de 70kg sans excès.
Généralement oui. L'EFSA a évalué les édulcorants intenses (aspartame, sucralose, acésulfame K) et conclu à leur sécurité aux doses consommées habituellement. Pour les sportifs en déficit calorique, les boissons zéro sucre permettent de maintenir une stimulation caféinée sans apport glucidique supplémentaire. La vigilance porte plutôt sur le cumul total de caféine journalière (max 400mg/jour selon l'EFSA pour un adulte sain).
La boisson énergisante apporte principalement de la caféine (80-160mg), parfois de la taurine et des vitamines B. Un pre-workout de musculation offre une formule plus complète : citrulline (6-8g pour la congestion), bêta-alanine (3,2g pour tamponner le lactate), créatine (3-5g pour la force) et souvent une dose de caféine plus élevée (150-300mg). Pour une séance de musculation exigeante avec objectif de performance, le pre-workout reste supérieur.
C'est une combinaison à surveiller. Un café contient environ 80-100mg de caféine, une boisson énergisante 80-150mg. L'EFSA fixe la limite de sécurité à 400mg/jour pour un adulte sain et recommande de ne pas dépasser 200mg en une seule prise. L'association café + boisson énergisante + éventuel pre-workout peut facilement dépasser ces seuils, avec des risques de tachycardie, nervosité et troubles du sommeil chez les individus sensibles.
Les données sur la taurine sont prometteuses mais moins robustes que pour la caféine. Certaines études suggèrent que la taurine (1-3g) peut améliorer la résistance musculaire à la fatigue et l'endurance aérobie. Une méta-analyse publiée dans le Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (2021) conclut à un effet modéré mais significatif de la taurine sur les performances d'endurance. Les doses dans les boissons énergisantes classiques (0,4-1g) restent souvent inférieures aux doses étudiées.
L'EFSA recommande que les enfants et adolescents évitent les boissons énergisantes contenant de la caféine. Au-delà du seuil de 3 mg/kg/jour, les effets indésirables (insomnie, nervosité, tachycardie) sont documentés chez les jeunes. En France, la DGCCRF déconseille les boissons énergisantes aux moins de 18 ans, aux femmes enceintes et allaitantes, et aux personnes présentant des problèmes cardiovasculaires ou une sensibilité à la caféine.
