Pre-workout supplements are among the most widely used supplements in bodybuilding. Energy boost, improved focus, increased muscle pump, support for exercise endurance — their promises are numerous. But not all pre-workouts are equal, and understanding the active ingredients is essential to making an informed choice suited to your profile and goals.

What is a pre-workout supplement?

A pre-workout supplement is a supplement formulated to be taken before a workout, generally 20 to 45 minutes before exercise. It combines several active ingredients intended to improve energy, mental focus, muscle pump and exercise endurance.

The key ingredients of a good pre-workout

Caffeine

Caffeine is the most studied ingredient in pre-workouts. Grgic et al. (2019, British Journal of Sports Medicine) published an umbrella review of 21 meta-analyses confirming that caffeine is ergogenic for aerobic endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, power and speed. An effective dose is between 3 and 6 mg/kg of body weight. Beyond that, the risk of side effects increases.

Citrulline malate

Pérez-Guisado and Jakeman (2010, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research) conducted a randomized double-blind crossover trial in 41 men, comparing 8 g of citrulline malate with a placebo before a 16-set chest workout. The results show a significant increase in the number of repetitions from the 3rd set onward (up to +52.92 % in the last set) and a 40 % reduction in muscle soreness at 24 and 48 hours. The only reported side effect was gastric discomfort in 14.6 % of participants. The clinically tested dose is 8 g per serving.

Beta-alanine

Hobson et al. (2012, Amino Acids) published a meta-analysis of 15 studies (360 participants) showing that beta-alanine significantly improves exercise performance, with an effect specifically documented for efforts lasting 60 to 240 seconds and longer — but no improvement for efforts lasting less than 60 seconds. The observed median effect is a 2.85 % improvement in performance, for a median total supplementation amount of 179 g of cumulative beta-alanine. It often causes a tingling sensation in the skin (paresthesia) — a normal and harmless effect.

Creatine

Some pre-workouts contain creatine. Kreider et al. (2017, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition) confirm that creatine monohydrate improves performance during repeated intense efforts, with an excellent safety profile. If the dose in the pre-workout is sufficient (3 to 5 g), it is a real benefit. If the dose is minimal (less than 1 g), it is better to manage your creatine separately. Pre-workout and timing: when should you take it?

The optimal window is generally 20 to 45 minutes before your workout. Caffeine reaches its peak plasma level in 30 to 60 minutes, according to Guest et al. (2021, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition), who recommend taking it around 60 minutes before exercise. Beta-alanine requires regular supplementation for a cumulative effect, regardless of when it is taken.

Side effects and precautions

Excess caffeine may cause anxiety, palpitations and insomnia. Beta-alanine causes harmless tingling. Some boosters containing yohimbine are not recommended for people with a history of heart conditions.

Peut-on prendre un pré-workout tous les jours y compris les jours sans entraînement ?

Non recommandé pour les formules stimulantes. La consommation quotidienne de caféine (via pré-workout + café + autres sources) accélère la tolérance, perturbe le sommeil et crée une dépendance fonctionnelle. Les jours de repos, les besoins en stimulation sont nuls — la caféine n'améliore pas la récupération passive.
